Lemony Chickpea Mash with Cucumber
This chickpea dip is meant to be rustic rather than silky. The adult takes care of the can and cucumber knife while the young cook mashes the beans. A little measured water makes them easier to spread without washing out the lemon flavor.

Before you begin · grown-up check
The grown-up opens, drains and rinses the chickpeas and cuts the cucumber; the child measures and mashes.
- Together wash hands with soap and water and clean the work surface.
- Adult checks ingredient labels, equipment and task suitability; ages are starting guides, not a guarantee of readiness.
- Adult handles sharp can edges and all cucumber cutting.
Ages are a starting guide. A grown-up checks your readiness and stays nearby. Follow the actor label on every step.

The skill you’re learning
A fork mash will have little pieces, unlike a blended dip. Measured liquid helps bind those pieces while keeping enough thickness to scoop.
Try one change
Replace the paprika with 1/8 tsp ground cumin.
Serving & storing
Refrigerate covered at 40°F or below within 2 hours of preparation (1 hour above 90°F); use within 1 day. Keep the cucumber separate from untasted leftover dip.
