Tomato Mozzarella Toasts
Tomato, mozzarella and a little dried basil make a simple toast topping. Let the adult handle the tomato knife and toaster. The young cook can blot the juicy tomato, arrange the cheese and learn why damp toppings go on at the last minute.

Before you begin · grown-up check
The grown-up slices the tomato, operates the toaster and removes the toast; the child adds the cool toppings.
- Together wash hands with soap and water and clean the work surface.
- Adult checks ingredient labels, equipment and task suitability; ages are starting guides, not a guarantee of readiness.
- Adult handles the tomato knife and all toaster steps.
Ages are a starting guide. A grown-up checks your readiness and stays nearby. Follow the actor label on every step.

The skill you’re learning
Blotting removes surface juice without removing the tomato flesh. It is a simple way to protect a crisp base when using a fresh, uncooked topping.
Try one change
Replace the mozzarella with 2 oz sliced cheddar.
Serving & storing
Refrigerate covered at 40°F or below within 2 hours of preparation (1 hour above 90°F); use within 1 day. Store cut tomato and cheese separately from toast.
