A printable observation sheet for reading a photograph, museum display, or accessible coastal view. Use a species name only if the identification is secure. Observe without collecting, planting, moving, or cutting a propagule.
Can you trace the long structure to its point of attachment? Describe its surface and surroundings. A single view cannot tell you its age or the amount of maternal support it receives.
Record orientation, water movement and whether the object changes position. Floating shows transport potential. It does not establish how long the journey lasted or whether the propagule will survive.
Describe the surface and what appears to hold the propagule. Avoid calling it rooted unless roots or sustained attachment can actually be observed.
What evidence would show continued growth? A repeat photograph from the same safe viewing point can answer a different question from a single close-up.
| Observation | Does not automatically show |
|---|---|
| Long propagule on a tree | Future survival or a destination |
| Buoyancy | Successful arrival or establishment |
| Contact with sediment | Rooting or lasting anchorage |
| A rooted seedling | Survival through later seasons |
