What does a match establish?
Three fictional cases. These descriptions use no medieval denomination code. Decide what each observation supports, then reveal the explanation.
1 · Both halves fit; both record the wrong sum
The physical match supports agreement between the records. It cannot establish that the initial amount was correct. An independently documented transaction could test that claim.
2 · One extra mark appears on one half only
The mismatch gives a reason to investigate alteration or error. It does not by itself identify who changed it, when it changed, or which half preserves the earlier state.
3 · A stranger brings a perfectly matching half
The match connects the objects. Whether the presenter is entitled to use the record requires evidence about identity, transfer, and the institution’s procedure.
Write a fourth case: the halves match, but the accompanying written account names someone else. What additional comparison would help? There is no single automatic resolution.
Paper-and-wood analogy only. This is not a reconstruction of Exchequer legal procedure.
