Shear has an opponent

Explore the diagnostic Ri = N²/S². N describes stable buoyancy response; S is a velocity gradient.

What does one quarter mean here?

Under classical inviscid, parallel-flow linear assumptions, Ri greater than 0.25 everywhere is sufficient for stability to small disturbances. Below that value is not a guarantee of instability or visible cloud billows. Finite-amplitude behavior requires more analysis.

A scalar comparison only. No cloud formation, disturbance growth, viscosity, mixing, terrain, or measured wind profile is simulated.
