A reading ledger for pea-aphid embryo development and Buchnera transmission. The rows describe different evidence questions, not a scaled anatomical diagram.
| Route | What is being followed? | Evidence to find |
|---|---|---|
| Aphid ancestry | Mother, daughter, early granddaughter | Developmental stage and physical location |
| Bacterial transmission | Buchnera from maternal bacteriocyte to embryo | Cell identity, membrane boundaries and microscopy |
A 2003 immunolabeling study visualized bacteria entering embryos and considered a possible membrane conduit. Higher-resolution 2012 work supported release from maternal cells followed by embryonic uptake, and rejected a continuous conduit in the observed transmission center. A suggestive shape and a resolved membrane boundary are different evidence.
