Read a bone worm from plume to root

A figure-reading aid for the 2013 Osedax research. Use the published microscopy, rather than treating the illustration as measured anatomy.

RegionQuestion for the paper
Visible plumeWhat is exposed above the bone?
Root epitheliumWhere was the proton-pumping machinery localized?
Root interiorWhere are symbiotic bacteria described?
Bone interfaceWhich proposed chemical step makes nutrients accessible?

Why the distinction matters

Finding a protein somewhere in the animal is different from locating it at the surface contacting bone. Localization strengthens a mechanism, but the complete nutrient route still requires multiple kinds of evidence.
