A reading sheet for the 2023 Brood X research. These are questions to answer from the paper, not instructions for deploying decoys or disturbing wildlife.
| Link | What evidence would you seek? |
|---|---|
| Cicadas → birds | Recorded feeding, with dates and observation effort. |
| Birds → caterpillars | Comparable measures of attack before and during emergence. |
| Caterpillars → oak leaves | Counts and leaf-loss measurements, separately from twig damage. |
A clay caterpillar can reveal attack marks under the deployment conditions. It does not behave or grow like a live caterpillar. The value comes from comparing that evidence with live counts and actual leaf damage.
